Deep Roots

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and a wise person captivates people. (Prov. 11:30; CSB)

Lately, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside someone struggling in their journey, though I am quickly reminded of my inadequacy as a comforter. I can point them, however, to Jesus, whose righteousness is a “tree of life” to all who follow Him. As Wisdom personified and embodied, Jesus captivated people with his words: words that bring people from darkness to light, from death to life.

As a follower of Jesus, I pray my life can be fruitful and bring healing to others, and that my words and life may (captivate) attract others to Jesus.

Sorrow

This song seems to capture my mood these days:

It feels like falling.
It feels like rain.
Like losing my balance
Again and again.
It once was so easy;
Breathe in, breathe out.
But at the foot of this mountain,
I only see clouds.

I feel out of focus,
Or at least indisposed
As this strange weather pattern
Inside me takes hold.
Each brave step forward,
I take three steps behind.
It’s mind over matter –
Matter over mind.

Slowly, then all at once.
A single loose thread
And it all comes undone.

Where there is light,
A shadow appears.
The cause and effect
When life interferes.
The same rule applies
To goodness and grief;
For in our great sorrow
We learn what joy means.

I don’t want to fight, I don’t want to fight it.
I don’t want to fight, I don’t want to fight it.
I don’t want to fight, I don’t want to fight it.
But I will learn to fight, I will learn to fight,
‘Til this pendulum finds equilibrium.

Slowly, then all at once.
The dark clouds depart,
And the damage is done.
So pardon the dust
While this all settles in.
With a broken heart,
Transformation begins.

Apart, We’re Only A Part

[lyrics are mine]

Love and shalom, together we are whole
The vows we made, the ties that bind
Connecting us together, soul to soul
Love is beautiful, love is blind

What can quench desire, the burning fire
Love bears all things, love is fragile
Seasons turn, memories burn: funeral pyre
Promises expire, passion only lasts awhile

Just took one match, just a spark
To break the trust, to lose what’s real
Watch everything burn, sitting in the dark
Two sad, too mad, two numb to feel

Alone, apart, we’re just a part
Only One, only One can make us whole
Don’t know how or where to start
To fill the hole, the hole in my soul

Making Space

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! (Hebrews 13:2; NLT)

Tonight I am feeling for you
Under the state of a strange land
You have sacrificed much to be here
Therefore the grace as I offer my hand
Welcome home, I bid you welcome, I bid you welcome
Welcome home from the bottom of my heart

Out here on the edge
The empire is fading by the day
And the world is so weary in war
Maybe we’ll find that new way

So welcome home, see I made a space for you now
Welcome home from the bottom of our heart
Welcome home from the bottom of our hearts
Keep it coming now, keep it coming now
You’ll find most of us here with our hearts wide open

Your love is like radiant diamonds
Bursting inside us we cannot contain
Your love will surely come find us
Like blazing wild fires singing Your name

God of mercy sweet love of mine
I have surrendered to Your design
May this offering stretch across the skies
And these Halleluiahs be multiplied

My soul finds rest in God alone
My salvation comes from him
My soul finds rest, God is my home

Grace Alone

I was an orphan, lost at the fall;
Running away when I’d hear you call,
But Father, you worked your will.
I had no righteousness of my own
I had no right to draw near your throne,
But Father, you loved me still.

And in love, before you laid the world’s foundation,
You predestined to adopt me as your own.
You have raised me up so high above my station;
I’m a child of God by grace, and grace alone

made alive forever

I once was dead in sin
Alone and hopeless,
A child of wrath I walked
Condemned in darkness,
But your mercy brought new life
And in your love and kindness,
Raised me up with Christ
And made me righteous.

You have bought me back
With the riches of,
Your amazing grace
And relentless love.
I’m made alive forever,
With you, life forever
By your grace I’m saved,
By your grace I’m saved.

Quo vadis?

My friend WPH shared with me this song he wrote, which I found very relevant as it nicely expresses my life journey these past few years:

Lonely steps, footprints trod
Many troubles on the way;
Sharing struggles joins our hearts
Turns a stranger to a friend

Arriving where I’ve been,
I am changed from within
The way is up, the way is down
Double back circle round
My heart is lost; my heart is found
The way is home, I’m stronger, sound

With your head in the clouds

Apparently, this song “is ‘primarily about the dangers of drug abuse’ comparing it with the spiritual high of religion”; the lyrics are quite interesting:

Valley’s deep and the mountain’s so high
If you want to see God you’ve got to move on the other side
You stand up there with your head in the clouds
Don’t try to fly you know you might not come down
Don’t try to fly, dear God, you might not come down

Jesus came down from Heaven to earth
The people said it was a virgin birth
Jesus came down from Heaven to earth
The people said it was a virgin birth
The people said it was a virgin birth

He told great stories of the Lord
And said he was the saviour of us all
He told great stories of the Lord
And said he was the savior of us all
And said he was the savior of us all

For this we killed him, nailed him up high
He rose again as if to ask us why
Then he ascended into the sky
As if to say in God alone you soar
As if to say in God, alone we fly

Valley’s deep and the mountain’s so high
If you want to see God you’ve got to move on the other side
You stand up there with your head in the clouds
Don’t try to fly you know you might not come down
Don’t try to fly, dear God, you might not come down
